Christmas/ Historical
Is an English traditional that tells of how Christmas was celebrated for twelve days before OliverCromwell cancelled it: when the world was turned upside down and the Lords and Ladies switched places with the servants. After Cromwell the world was turned upside down in a different way: when all the old traditions of hopitality and festivities were killed off.
Historical/ Protest Song
was a name that was appended to several threatening letters during the rural Swing Riots of 1830, when labourers rioted over the introduction of new threshing machines and the loss of their livelihoods. The name was made-up and it came to symbolise the anger of the poor labourers in rural England who wanted a return to the pre-machine days when human labour was used.
Musical/ Christmas
Taken from the musical "Oliver Twist", here we play live at a Christmas market in Germany. We love acting out the tongue in cheek stories and charaters together!
Tradional/ Love Duet/ Maritime Ballad
This ballad is about a maid languishing in Bedlam while her true love is at sea. It is both happy and deeply melacholy. Which is why we love it!
Traditional Folk Song
We love the hilarious repeats of the six names of the men involved and the fact that we made our own lovely bridge in the middle! This delicious song tells of how a man wants to borrow Tom Pierce's beloved grey mare. He and his six friends promise to bring her back after riding to Widecomb Fair: but the poor horse dies on the way back and is said to haunt the hills afterwards: along with all six culprits!
Traditional/ Sea Shanty
A sea shanty about British sailors who have to leave their Spanish sweethearts behind when they are called back to England.
